The great majority of grease application have a parallel where lubricating oils may be used and hence a grease must be able to provide equal performance in all respects. Such applications include :

- Where the equipment is so designed that there is no way to retain oil for the parts being lubricated, e.g. open gears, wheel bearings, chassis spring,etc.
- Where the lubricant must act as a seal
- Where lubrication is infrequent, e.g. electric motor bearings, etc.
